Trash Compactor Zine
CD - Dagger 2002.
Running Of The Bulls / Where Do The Elephants Go When They Die? / Squawk! / Twisted Around / Monkey Bar
This one really took me by surprise because it is so different from what I had expected... and it's great!!! I can't really tell you what I had expected but certainly not such a very, very cool garagey, organ driven brand of sound that the band is pulling off here. Don't get me wrong, this is not your usual 60's garage retro revival drag, the Chicken McHeads are not afraid of weaving horns into their music, as well as novelty elements that resemble the tracks that horror host legend Zacherly recorded (remember Monster Mash?) in the 60's. For those of you who insist on drawing parallels, imagine Gas Huffer doing mid-tempo garage/soul trash while riding on a ghost train. Also, the first song, "Running Of The Bulls" kinda reminds me of great early Dead Kennedys weirdness. Can it be??? Speaking of songs, all five of them are great on their own - Where Do The Elephants Go When They Die? with its snot-caked vocals is my personal fave at the moment - but listening to the whole enchilada makes for highest entertainment value. If there is a God in heaven, Chicken McHead should find a record label and have a full-lengther out in no time, and I'll be first in line to buy it... and you should be there with me! Meanwhile, contact these guys at kgrave2000@hotmail.com

Often I have
to review desperate hc\punk bands from Italy, but
this time it's Chicken McHead's turn. Chicken McHead are an
old-style punk oriented American
band with many Cramps influences. Sometimes they also remind me of
Mudhoney.
They're
strange, ironic and their lyrics are sarcastic. "Running
of the Bulls", "Where do the Elephants go when they Die?",
"Squawk!", "Twisted Around", and "Monkey Bar" are
the titles of the songs, which in themselves are well representative of
the band's creativity. Coarse
sounds, a semi-guttural voice and a strange piano are the other
interesting elements
of their cool music. If you like the Cramps, but with a few more risky
shadings, do not deprive yourself of this CD.
